Intention official: NRW interested in hosting the Olympics

North Rhine-Westphalia would like to participate in a possible German bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Andrea Milz (CDU), State Secretary for Sport and Volunteering in NRW, and Düsseldorf's Lord Mayor Stephan Keller (CDU) signed a letter of intent in which North Rhine-Westphalia officially declares its willingness to apply as a candidate for the German Olympic Sports Confederation's (DOSB) selection process to host the Games.

"North Rhine-Westphalia can submit a bid to the DOSB that is 100 percent ecologically, economically and socially sustainable," Milz is quoted as saying in a statement published on Tuesday by the Rhein Ruhr City Olympic Initiative. "Located in the heart of Europe, Rhein Ruhr City will bring the Games to the people and thus meet the requirements of ecologically sustainable transportation options."

According to the press release, 95 percent of the sports facilities required for the Games are already available in Germany's most populous federal state. This is in line with the DOSB's strategy and the expectations of the International Olympic Committee. They stipulate that sports facilities that are already available or only need to be built temporarily should be used. 15 municipalities are involved in the initiative.

The most recent Olympic campaigns failed due to resistance and the vote of the population in Munich and Hamburg. Bidding for the 2036 or 2040 Summer Games would be realistic.

In addition to North Rhine-Westphalia with the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region, Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig and Munich are also considered possible venues for a German Olympic bid. However, the chances of a German bid are not necessarily high, as there is strong international competition.

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia, led by State Secretary Andrea Milz and Düsseldorf's Lord Mayor Stephan Keller, aims to align its sports policy with the German Olympic Sports Confederation's (DOSB) selection process, as they express their interest in hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Within this context, Milz emphasized that North Rhine-Westphalia's bid can promise a 100% sustainable approach to the Games, given its location in the heart of Europe and the availability of 95% of the necessary sports facilities.
