Intel settlement: State establishes high-tech park for suppliers
In the wake of US chip manufacturer Intel's move to Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt is pressing ahead with the establishment of the planned high-tech park. As was announced in the state parliament's finance committee on Monday, the state now wants to take over the establishment of the corresponding company. Originally, the municipalities involved were supposed to do this, but according to the Ministry of Finance, an agreement could not be reached. The necessary structures must therefore be created immediately on the state side "in order not to jeopardize the settlement", according to a letter from the Ministry of Finance to the committee.
The high-tech park in the vicinity of the Intel site is primarily intended for supplier companies. The Ministry of Finance has budgeted around 250 million euros for this, including for the purchase of land and the takeover of existing contracts. The state would like to finance this by taking out a loan.
The Left Party criticized the plan. With the new company, debts would be taken on bypassing parliament, said financial policy spokesperson Kristin Heiß.
The state parliament's economic policy committee is involved in the decision-making process regarding the financing of the high-tech park, as the Left Party criticized the plan to bypass parliament for debt takings. The creation of committees in Parliament is essential for the scrutiny of economic policies and their financial implications, including major projects like the high-tech park.
