Biopic - Insights into the life of Edvard Munch

There is a lot of hype surrounding the painter Edvard Munch these days. There are currently two exhibitions in Berlin and Potsdam dedicated to the work of the expressionist artist. A feature film is also being released to mark the 160th anniversary of the Norwegian's birth. "Munch" looks at the life of a restless artist in various episodes.

Today, Munch is one of the most important modern artists. His work "The Scream" is one of the most important (and most expensive) paintings of the 20th century. In the film by Norwegian director Henrik Martin Dahlsbakken, viewers learn more about his life.

Four episodes focus on Munch's life at different times. At one point he is 20, at another 29, then 45 and finally 80 years old. For example, he is shown as an aspiring artist in (modern) Berlin. In 1892, Munch caused such a scandal with an exhibition there that his works were taken down after a few days. In the film, the planned exhibition does not even take place.

Bold colors and brushstrokes

According to the film, Munch, who died in 1944, left behind almost 30,000 works of art. Painting was the center of his life. But not everyone could relate to Munch's art during his lifetime. His expressionist painting style with bold colors and brushstrokes and the unsparing themes of sexuality, illness and death frightened some. They accused him of making "sick art".

Such criticism drives Munch in the film. At the same time, he struggles with mental problems, saying things like: "A bird of prey is nesting in my head", or: "My blood is laced with illness and fear."

Director Dahlsbakken said in a statement that he sees "the structure of the film like an exhibition that reveals more and more about the artist the longer you look at it".
