The New Year brings about some changes. In addition to citizens' finances, minimum wages, and pensions, there is also a change in the labeling of the origin of products in the meat sections of supermarkets.

Innovations in Kaufland, Edeka, and Co.: Pursuing Noble Goals. In 2024, reforms will come into effect that will also impact the incomes of many citizens. There are plans to increase the minimum wage and benefits for citizens.

However, dining out may become more expensive. In addition to financial changes requiring German citizens to reassess their finances, significant innovations are also coming to the meat sections.

Innovations in Kaufland, Edeka, and Co.: Mandatory origin labeling on every meat counter

This innovation primarily affects those who predominantly sell unpackaged meat.

Starting from February 2024, the origin of pork, lamb, goat, and poultry will be specified, detailing both cultivation and slaughter. Exceptions apply to processed products. Consumers will also benefit from these innovations.

From 2024, people will know how the animals were raised and slaughtered in Kaufland, Edeka, and Co. and from which farming it originates. The labeling should not only be printed on the packaging but also visible on the meat counter.

This applies to fresh, chilled, and frozen:

  • Pork;
  • Lamb;
  • Goat;
  • Poultry;
  • Minced meat.

Packaged meat and sausage products are currently excluded.

Where exactly should the origin be indicated?

As explained by the German Butchers' Association (DFV), unpackaged meat should be labeled either directly on the meat at the counter or through notification, or through other written, including electronic, offerings. This includes small signs on the counter, information in food and beverage menus, or price lists.

Meat shops, also present in Kaufland branches, mainly sourcing meat from one country, may indicate that country once. After that, they will only need to provide additional information about meat from other origins. This change is a result of a previously implemented innovation.

After several unsuccessful attempts, the Bundestag has decided on a new livestock logo. Consequently, a new state livestock logo must appear on meat products by the end of 2023. This is the new logo for state livestock.

Due to the mandatory origin labeling, consumers will be able to see the country of origin and farming methods for unpackaged pork, lamb, goat, poultry, and minced meat starting from February 2024 in Kaufland, Edeka, and other supermarkets. The labeling should be visible directly on the meat counter or through notification, ensuring transparency for customers.

Following the decision of the Bundestag, a new state livestock logo must appear on meat products by the end of 2023, providing customers with additional information about the source and quality of their meat purchases.
