- Initial flights suspensions at Lufthansa affiliate Discover Flights.
At Discover Airlines, a Lufthansa subsidiary, certain flights were initially canceled following the commencement of the strike. This included a couple of long-haul departures and round trips on the short-haul route. A few additional short-haul flights were set to be handled by partner airlines, ensuring no modifications to passengers' itineraries, according to reports.
The spokesperson mentioned, "Our primary goal is to operate as many flights as possible for our passengers"
With approximately 55 flights scheduled for Tuesday, Discover Airlines emphasized their intention to maintain this level of operations for the subsequent days, stating, "It's our ongoing priority to operate as many flights as possible for our passengers".
The unions, Cockpit (VC) and UFO, had called for a four-day strike participation from pilots and cabin crew, stretching until August 30th. This strike impacted all departures from Germany.
Established in 2021, Discover Airlines manages a fleet of 27 aircraft, serving leisure destinations in Europe and beyond from Frankfurt and Munich. Approximately 1,900 staff members work with the airline.
During the strike period, around 270 flights were expected from Frankfurt and Munich, as per Discover Airlines' plans.
In an effort to minimize the strike's effects, Discover Airlines aims to shift some flights to other Lufthansa subsidiaries. The UFO union expects Lufthansa to implement similar strategies. The Union anticipates round 270 flights from Discover Airlines during the strike period.
The labor dispute originates from a clash with the Verdi union, which had already negotiated initial collective bargaining agreements for pilots and cabin crew at Discover Airlines. Demands from UFO and Cockpit(VC) are not vastly dissimilar to those agreed with Verdi, but each union is striving to establish their unique collective agreements.
Discover Airlines announced that they will continue to prioritize operating as many flights as possible during the strike period, with 55 flights scheduled for Tuesday and an intention to maintain this level for subsequent days. Despite the strike impacting all departures from Germany, Discover Airlines, as a subsidiary of Lufthansa, is working to shift some flights to other Lufthansa subsidiaries, such as Discover Airline's operations.
