Police operation - Information about a threat: Christmas market in Göppingen cleared

Police evacuated a Christmas market in Göppingen on Saturday following a tip-off about a threatening situation. They received the tip-off at 7.40 pm and then decided to close the Christmas market quickly, said a spokesperson for the Ulm police in the evening. "It was all calm, orderly and without any problems." The spokesperson was unable to say how many people were on site. "Bild" initially reported on the incident.

In the evening, the town of Göppingen issued a statement saying that there had been a "threat of attack" against the Christmas market. "I am in constant contact with the relevant authorities and hope that the perpetrator can be caught quickly," said Lord Mayor Alexander Maier. The safety of citizens is a top priority and the preventative evacuation of the market is welcomed.

The criminal investigation department has started the investigation. The police spokesman would not comment on whether it was a bomb threat. He also did not provide any further information on the background to the threat, citing tactical investigative reasons. The police were on the scene with large forces and were providing security. A helicopter was also deployed in the evening.

They were also in contact with the town of Göppingen and the event organizer. From a police point of view, the Christmas market could reopen on Sunday, the spokesperson said. Mayor Maier also said in his statement that it was assumed that the market would be able to reopen on Sunday. "The police and city will take further security measures if necessary."
