Information about a gunman: Police search comprehensive school
Following reports of an armed person, the police are on a large-scale operation around a comprehensive school in Solingen. There is a vague suspicion that an armed person has approached the school and may be in the building, the city of Solingen announced on Friday.
Even though it is not yet clear whether there is a concrete threat, the police and the city are taking the situation very seriously, it said. The pupils remained in their classrooms until the police had searched classroom by classroom.
From the rooms declared safe, teachers and pupils were then escorted outside by the police and led away from the school class by class. The police surrounded the school.
The person was not seen directly on the school grounds, but on a street nearby, a police spokesman said on Friday. "The police are currently searching the school building and the school grounds," a police spokeswoman confirmed.
Both the police and the city have set up a crisis team. Concerned parents have been asked not to come to school and a crisis hotline is currently being set up for them. A contact point has been set up on site for parents who want to pick up their children.
A week and a half ago, there had already been a major incident at the comprehensive school. The comprehensive school was affected when several institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia and other federal states received threats in connection with the Gaza war.
Given the current emergency situation at the comprehensive school due to the reported presence of an armed person, it's crucial for the school to have an emergency plan in place.
