The tourism industry in North Rhine-Westphalia is looking forward to the 2024 European Football Championships with great expectations. "The hotels in the host cities and the surrounding area are likely to be full in any case," said Tonia Haag, spokesperson for the umbrella organization Tourismus NRW, to dpa on Sunday.

With Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen, Düsseldorf and Cologne, NRW will host four of the ten venues for the 2024 European Football Championship (June 14 to July 14) in Germany. Twenty of the 51 matches will be played here. Among the 14 preliminary round matches, the game between Spain and Italy (Gelsenkirchen) is one of the sporting highlights. From the perspective of the tourism industry, the match between Belgium and Romania on June 22 in Cologne also gives cause for hope: Tourismus NRW is expecting many day visitors from the neighboring country.

"And after that, of course, it would be great if we could also host the Dutch in the knockout rounds," said Haag. "That would certainly bring in a lot more day visitors, which would also benefit the hospitality and retail sectors." The Netherlands could come to Düsseldorf as group runners-up in the round of 16. As group winners, they would - with further victories - play their semi-final in Dortmund. If they finish third in their group, they could go to Cologne or Gelsenkirchen in the round of 16.

The German national team must also get through the preliminary round in order to play in NRW: As group winners, they would go to Dortmund in the round of 16, and as group runners-up, they would go to Düsseldorf in the quarter-finals after surviving the round of 16. If Germany finishes third in the preliminary round, the round of 16 match could take place in Cologne.

As the matches of individual groups all take place in NRW, Tourismus NRW expects fans not to change hotels and stay there for several nights. Düsseldorf is also a UEFA contact point for celebrities and state guests. The hope is to benefit from the European Championships in the medium and long term. The European Championships are to play a role in tourism advertising, but they do not want to limit themselves to this.
