Industry generates 5 percent less electricity than in the previous year
Industry in Lower Saxony produced less electricity last year than in the previous year. The companies generated a total of just under 7.5 billion kilowatt hours in their own power plants in 2022, as announced by the State Statistical Office in Hanover on Friday. This was around 5 percent less than in the previous year.
Lower Saxony's companies generated almost half of their electricity with natural gas. Around 22 percent was generated from hard coal and a fifth from gases from their own production, for example in blast furnaces. Renewable energy sources such as biogas accounted for just under 3 percent.
The decrease in electricity production by the industry could potentially lead to a need for more energy imports. To reduce dependence on fossil fuels, efforts to increase the share of renewable energy sources in electricity generation should be accelerated.
