Indoor tournament in Braunschweig canceled for 2024

The Braunschweig indoor horse show has established itself. It also seemed to have coped with the coronavirus years and celebrated its 20th edition this year. Now it has been surprisingly canceled for 2024.

Equestrian sport - Indoor tournament in Braunschweig canceled for 2024

Due to economic and general uncertainties, the organizers are suspending the "Classico" indoor equestrian tournament in Braunschweig for 2024. "After careful consideration and taking into account the economic and sporting factors, the risk of competing in 2024 is too great. We would now like to focus on 2025 so that we can come back stronger after a year's break," said tournament director Axel Milkau in a statement. According to Milkau, the 20th edition of the show jumping event last March, with the Grand Prix of Lower Saxony as the highlight, had been carried out in a financially healthy manner despite the negative impact of the coronavirus-related cancellations in the two previous years. However, "the general uncertainties have also increased significantly due to the global political situation," he emphasized. Costs have risen overall.

In addition, international equestrian sport is changing at "breathtaking speed". This is a development that an organizer has to face up to. "When we organize a show, we want to guarantee the highest quality. At the moment, it seems that our previous and successful sports concept is no longer sustainable," explained Milkau.

The economic partners expect an arc of excitement across all tournament days. "To achieve this, we need a sport concept with which the sport can stage itself and which is supported by the international equestrian scene."

Braunschweig's Lord Mayor Thorsten Kornblum regretted the decision. "This decision also comes as a surprise to us after the fantastic anniversary edition in March this year," he said. "But we respect the decision and have discussed the prospects of the Classico in joint talks with the organizers. Its continuation is important to us." A date for the 21st edition has already been set. It will take place from March 7 to 9.
