Public prosecutor's office - Indictment after arson in two-family house in Herford

Following a fire in a two-family house in Herford, the public prosecutor's office in Bielefeld has charged a 21-year-old with attempted manslaughter and dangerous arson. Public prosecutor Christopher York told dpa on Tuesday that the accused only found out on the day of the crime that his ex-girlfriend had a new partner. Even a year after the break-up, he had probably not been able to cope with this and may have been in an exceptional psychological situation. York had initially assumed that it was attempted murder. This accusation is no longer tenable.

On the morning of October 20, the man is said to have spread petrol in the 19-year-old's apartment and set it alight. The smoke drifted into the upper floors. There, a smoke alarm warned a sleeping 31-year-old woman, who was able to leave the building unharmed.

The "Westfalen-Blatt" had previously reported.
