In the state of Schleswig-Holstein, the number of people voting during the first hours of the European election is lower than in the past. As per official records, only 14.9% of eligible voters had cast their votes. This is in comparison to 17.0% during the same time in the 2019 European election and 14.4% in 2014. The polling stations will stay open till 6:00 pm. This region has around 2.318 million people who can vote, and for the first time, those above 16 years of age are also allowed to participate in the elections. Approximately 107,400 citizens from other EU countries are also eligible to vote in Schleswig-Holstein.
This time, there are 34 parties contesting the elections, which is four less than in 2019. The European Parliament has a strength of 720 members, and Germany sends 96 representatives. Currently, Schleswig-Holstein has never had more than four representatives in the parliament.
The last time these elections took place in 2019, the Greens led in the region with 29.1%, the CDU was second with 26.2%, the SPD stood at 17.1%, the AfD had 7.5% while the FDP gained 5.9%, and the Left Party secured 3.7% of the votes.
These European elections occur every five years. During the last electoral event in 2019, the Greens in Schleswig-Holstein got the maximum votes - 29.1%, CDU had the second-highest with 26.2%, SPD had 17.1%, AFAD bagged 7.5%, and FDP secured 5.9%. The Left Party received 3.7% of the votes.
