Nature or the surrounding conditions of a place. - Indicators aim to promote tidiness in Frankfurt.
Frankfurt's downtown area is installing new warning signs to encourage cleanliness in the city center. These signs have been hung along the busy Zeil shopping street, as well as at the Hauptwache and Konstablerwache, and other central areas. "We aim to spark a movement," states City Councilor Stafanie Wüst (FDP). Residents should all play their part in keeping the city beautiful, tidy, and secure in their own way. After all, cleanliness is consistently a matter of concern and a source of complaints among the population.
The signs offer images to remind people not to thoughtlessly toss trash, which would result in a 55 euro fine according to the information. Proving to be litterers comes with a 70 euro fine. And if someone neglects to clean up after their dog, they must pay 180 euros.
"People enjoy residing, working, and spending their leisure time in places that are secure and clean," explains Matthias Hinrich, the City Police Chief. Thus, the officers will continuously monitor these areas during patrols and operations to ensure that "we suppress any form of littering and contamination."
A well-maintained inner city is an appealing inner city, adds Alexander Theiss from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) in Frankfurt. He cites the pedestrian survey "Vital Inner Cities 2022" conducted locally by the IHK and the Economic Development Corporation, awarding Frankfurt City a grade of 3.1 for cleanliness.
For Frank Diergardt, the installation of these signs is not sufficient just yet. Business owners prefer more action, adds the spokesperson for Neue Zeil, an organization representing the interests of the tenants along the main shopping street Zeil. "We can only hope and pray that something concrete occurs."
