India's revitalized opposition launches counterattack, vowing to "save democracy"

In January, Narendra Modi began his unofficial election campaign by addressing a gathering at a majestic Hindu temple, proclaiming that India was stepping into a "divine" period marking the initiation of a "new time cycle."

India's revitalized opposition launches counterattack, vowing to "save democracy"

January marked the beginning of an important project involving the inauguration of the Ram Mandir on the former site of a destroyed mosque. This event was seen by experts as a significant step towards India leaving its secular, pluralist beginnings and embracing a new future as a Hindu country.

This Tuesday night, Modi's BJP Party lost its seat in the town where this temple is located. This event sent shockwaves through a nation where a strong ideology of Hindu nationalism under Modi's leadership had previously dominated everyday lives.

During this election, however, local issues such as high unemployment and rising inflation took center stage, causing many voters to question the BJP's strident ideology.

Despite the BJP retaining the most seats in Parliament, their dominance was far less than expected. The INDIA alliance, a group of diverse political parties, won 235 out of 543 seats, preventing the BJP from forming a supermajority. This meant they could not enact radical change.

Rahul Gandhi, the prominent face of the opposition, was once seen as an ineffective and weak leader. However, the election results revealed that many voters rejected the BJP's ideology and their vision of a Hindu-first nation.

Though the opposition faced defeat, their views were still seen as a victory by many. In Modi's third consecutive term as prime minister, he will have to rely on his coalition allies more than ever before.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge told reporters on Wednesday that this was a mandate to uphold the Constitution of India and defend democracy.

A Far From Fair Contest

According to some critics, this was not a regular election. Yogendra Yadav, an Indian activist, stated that it was not a normal contest. Gandhi, from a legendary political family that has seen three prime ministers, was disqualified as a lawmaker and also given a two-year jail sentence for defamation, in a case he claims was politically motivated. He was later reinstated by the Supreme Court and was not imprisoned.

Before the elections, the Congress party openly claimed that the BJP had crippled them by freezing their accounts, making it impossible to use over $20 million of their funding.

Additional controversies included the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal, the renowned Delhi chief minister, who was jailed for alleged corruption. Kejriwal is now back in jail after his release during the campaign.

The BJP have repeatedly denied accusations of political motivation.

Yadav called this election "not a normal contest." The Congress party, despite not winning, still seemed triumphant.

Achieving the Impossible

The state of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state with over 200 million residents, is a symbol of the BJP's disappointment. It lies in the heart of the "Hindi belt," where Modi enjoys significant support due to his Hindu-first policies. In this area, the INDIA alliance appeared to receive the support of the majority, winning 43 out of 80 seats - a potential rejection of the controversial vision for a Hindu-first nation.

In the western state of Rajasthan, Modi's election campaign became highly divisive when he accused the Congress of attempting to distribute the country's wealth solely among Muslims, referring to them as "infiltrators."

One of the BJP's most prominent lawmakers in Banswara, a two-time incumbent, was defeated by a candidate from a much smaller regional party.

TV Paul, a professor from McGill University, stated that the BJP may not have marketed their Hindu agenda to the extent they intended, and other factors influenced the voters.

Milan Vaishnav from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace noted that the prime minister did not present a clear issue or narrative for the election, so attention turned to more local concerns like jobs, inflation, and individual politicians.

"In the absence of that, what we've got in a federal country like India is a series of state-by-state, local contests where more mundane, parochial issues really matter," he said.

With results slowly emerging on Tuesday evening, the Congress celebrated their victories from various corners of the nation. At their headquarters in New Delhi's capital, excitement filled the air.

Lakshman Valhekar, who had traveled an impressive 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from his home in Maharashtra, exuded enthusiasm for the future. "Rahul Gandhi is the only hope for our country!" he exclaimed. "I have complete faith in them. The BJP is finished. It's over."

According to Paul, a professor at McGill University, this electorate has a history of standing up strongly to any form of authoritarian rule.

In the presence of a large audience in New Delhi, Gandhi, holding a miniature version of India's constitution in his hands, stood to address the crowd.

"To rescue this," he began, "we have taken the initial, substantial action."

Despite the BJP's victory in the elections, their dominance was significantly reduced, allowing other political parties like the INDIA alliance to gain a strong foothold in Parliament. This shift in power could potentially lead to a more balanced approach towards the government's policies, including its stance on secularism and its vision for a Hindu-first nation, as India continues to navigate its role in the global stage.

As India moves forward in this new political landscape, the revitalized opposition led by figures like Rahul Gandhi will continue to advocate for the upholding of the Constitution and the preservation of democratic values, particularly in the face of controversies and allegations of political manipulation that have marked recent elections.
