- Increased unlawful crossings anticipated to surpass annual total by July's end in 2023.
In Mecklenburg-Vorpombern, there've been more unauthorized immigrants nabbed by the end of July this year compared to the entirety of 2021. As reported by responses from the Federal Ministry of the Interior to an inquiry by AfD Bundestag MP Leif-Erik Holm, the Federal Police found 1,727 unauthorized immigrants in Mecklenburg-Vorpombern during the first seven months of this year. Previously, the Federal Police had recorded 1,667 for the whole year of 2021.
The start of this week saw Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) issuing an order for temporary checks at all German land borders to decrease the number of illegal entrants more efficiently. These checks have been implemented at the Mecklenburg-Vorpombern-Poland border, as well as at other sections, since the autumn of last year.
Faeser's ministry has also devised a "model for EU law-compliant and effective return shuffles" that surpasses the current return operations. During a meeting of representatives from the traffic light coalition, the Union, and the federal states, Faeser proposed a specific border procedure for assessing asylum applications, according to government sources.
Holm, who also serves as the state chairman of the AfD in Mecklenburg-Vorpombern, stated, "The numbers highlight the significance of securing our borders." Despite efforts to curtail illegal immigration, they've been hindered by the fact that captured immigrants are moved to initial reception centers and then dispatched to municipalities from there. "For quite some time now, we've been advocating for deporting illegals at the border." It's about time that Faeser took action. "However, actions must follow the announcement promptly."
The surge in unauthorized immigrants in Mecklenburg-Vorpombern may be a consequence of ongoing migration trends. Implementing Faeser's proposed border procedure could potentially reduce the number of unauthorized immigrants entering the country.
