After a lethal knife assault on a police officer in Mannheim, the issue of enhanced security is also being addressed in Brandenburg. The CDU and the Left Party put forward differing plans for greater protection.

Illegal activities or wrongdoings. - Increased security sought for law enforcement personnel in Brandenburg region.

Certain parliamentary groups believe that law enforcement officials in Brandenburg deserve stronger protection. "It's time for democratic parties to work together and come up with solutions to ensure the safety of officers in this country," stated Sebastian Walter, leader of the Left Party, in Potsdam on Tuesday. What they need are the finest equipment and training. This comes in response to the tragic stabbing incident in Mannheim where a police officer was fatally injured.

Jan Redmann, leader of the CDU faction, believes that boosting their protective gear with stun guns is necessary. "In the upcoming legislative term, we must increase the resources that also serve to secure our police officers and policewomen," said Redmann. He cited the example of fully stocking them with "stun guns" as a potential move. In 2021, the Brandenburg police tested the devices and gradually added them to their armory.

CDU advocates for enlarged police powers

Redmann remains firm on his demand for enhanced powers for law enforcement on the web. "We must also prioritize individual cases better," he added. Many times, tracking down individuals with radical tendencies can only be done by closely monitoring their behavior online. The Greens refused to support a significant amendment to the Police Act during this election season.

Last Friday, a 25-year-old Afghan man produced a knife at an anti-Islam demonstration on Mannheim's market square in Baden-Württemberg and injured six men, including a police officer. This tragedy resulted in the death of the 29-year-old officer due to his injuries.
