- Increased occurrences of incidents involving hazardous materials in water settings
There's been a rise in incidents related to hazardous substances that pose a threat to water bodies in Bavaria in 2023. This is based on statistics provided by the Bavarian State Office for Statistics located in Fürth. According to these stats, a total of 365 such incidents were reported last year, which is 51 more than the previous year. In 76 instances, protected water areas were impacted. The released amount of potentially hazardous substances, including mineral oils, totaled approximately 1,300 cubic meters in 2023.
The majority of these incidents, as reported by the authorities, happen during the transport of hazardous water substances. Sadly, there were 12 cases of fish deaths, and 11 instances where water supply or groundwater was affected. Overall, there's been a continuous increase in the number of incidents involving hazardous water substances. In the initial part of the last decade, incidents were typically less than 300 per year.
The increase in hazardous substance incidents, primarily during transportation, led to 12 unfortunate accidental fish deaths last year. Due to these incidents, 11 instances of water supply or groundwater contamination were also recorded.
