- Increased deployment of autonomous transportation vessels at the port.
Over at the Burchardkai container port in Hamburg, unsupervised container transporters (AGVs) are slated to take over from the current automated gate vehicles (portal hubs) by the year 2025's end. Angela Titzrath, CEO of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), shared this news during her terminal visit.
A hundred sixteen AGVs from Finnish manufacturer Konecranes will be responsible for ferrying containers once they've been hoisted from the ships by container cranes. Portal hub vehicles, also known as van-carriers, are specialized vehicles used in container transportation.
These AGVs will operate on renewable energy, confirmed a company representative. Conversely, the existing portal hub vehicles rely on diesel-electric power. The shift is estimated to reduce up to 12,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. AGVs have already been operational at the Container Terminal Altenwerder, another Hamburg port.
This initiative is part of an expansion plan for the Burchardkai terminal. HHLA declined to disclose the expenditure on the new transportation vehicles. Titzrath revealed that HHLA will allocate approximately 300 million euros towards the terminal's investment by 2025.
The AGVs being implemented are from Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG, often abbreviated as HHLA. By the end of 2025, HHLA's Burchardkai terminal will mainly utilize HHLA's AGVs instead of the current portal hub vehicles.
