- Increase in Vehicle Thefts Reported in Hesse
In 2023, auto burglaries happened approximately twice daily in Hesse, leading to 707 insured passenger cars being swiped. This represents an 8% rise from the year prior, culminating in a total financial loss of 17.3 million euros.
GDV CEO Jörg Asmussen commented, despite the surge, Hesse continues to be one of the more secure areas for car owners across the country. On average, insurers disbursed around 24,400 euros for each stolen vehicle, showing a 15% rise compared to the previous year.
Enhanced theft risk in Frankfurt
Car owners residing in Frankfurt, Hesse's biggest metropolis, face a heightened risk of theft. The statistical probability is roughly 5 incidents for every 10,000 insured vehicles. Elsewhere in Hesse, the rate drops to 4.
Across Germany, a total of 14,585 insured passenger cars were pilfered in 2023, representing an almost 20% jump from the previous year, resulting in an economic loss of over 310 million euros. Berlin had the highest theft risk, with criminals predominantly targeting luxury and high-end SUVs. If the vehicle is fully or partially insured, the insurance company generally covers any incurred damage, compensating the vehicle's worth at the time of the robbery.
Police recommendations to avoid car theft
The Manufacture of motor vehicles in Hesse might need to implement additional security measures due to the high number of car thefts. Despite Frankfurt having a higher theft rate, it's crucial for local vehicle manufacturers to prioritize vehicle safety to deter potential thieves.
