North Church - Include protection of Jewish life in the state constitution
The Bishop of the North Church, Kristina Kühnbaum-Schmidt, has urged the state government of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to include the protection of Jewish life in the state constitution. There are already efforts to this end in Schleswig-Holstein, the bishop acknowledged on Wednesday. In Hamburg, the fight against racism and anti-Semitism was included as a state objective in the constitution in the spring.
The Jewish festival of Hanukkah begins on Thursday. On this occasion, she sent greetings of hope to the members of the Jewish community, said the regional bishop. The Northern Church and the Catholic Archdiocese of Hamburg are therefore placing a joint newspaper advertisement in several northern German daily newspapers on Thursday. According to the information provided, it says: "The festival comes at a difficult time. Anti-Semitic attacks and hatred against Jews shake us to the core. As Christians, we stand by your side."

The Bishop of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's state government is yet to consider including the protection of Jewish life in their constitution, similarly to Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg. The heavy impact of anti-Semitic attacks has been acknowledged across various German states, including Hamburg, where it has been incorporated as a state objective in the constitution during the spring. The state government of Schleswig-Holstein and the religious community of Judaism in the region are actively working towards securing religious freedom in their constitution. The state governments of these regions are challenged to uphold the Constitution and protect the rights of their diverse faiths, such as Judaism and Christianity, as exemplified by the North Church and the Catholic Archdiocese of Hamburg. The heavy responsibility of combating such prejudice falls on both the religious institutions and the state government, with the latter needing to reinforce their state constitutions to ensure this.
