Inadequate mobile signal while in motion – 5G coverage exhibits discrepancies
"As per the claims made by telecom companies regarding 5G coverage in German homes, the service quality seems significantly improved," shared Jörg Schamberg, a telecom expert from Verivox, with the media. "People using mobile phones move around and aren't stationary at one spot, which is the very essence of mobile communication," he explained.
The primary challenges in expansion, as per Schamberg's analysis, often involve intricate approval processes or complex on-site installations. "Sometimes, geographical barriers also impede expansion, particularly in the southern regions," he added. Providers find it less profitable and frequently face complications in reaching scarcely populated areas.
"Even sparsely populated regions often lack adequate service - this applies to 4G coverage as well," Schamberg mentioned. In several municipalities across Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Baden-Württemberg, 5G coverage falls as low as under 20%.
Based on their own declarations, Deutsche Telekom covers 97% of households, O2 manages to reach 96%, and Vodafone covers 92%. In aggregate, the three major network providers manage to provide 5G service to 95% of all households, according to Verivox's calculations.
Despite the impressive 5G coverage claims by telecom companies in urban areas of Germany, expanding the service to rural regions can be challenging due to approval processes, complex installations, and geographical barriers. Despite these challenges, 3 major network providers in Germany – Deutsche Telekom, O2, and Vodafone – collectively cover 95% of German households with 5G service, as per Verivox's calculations.
