In Thuringia, the CDU and AfD are closely tied in the district and city council elections.
The tally proceeded on Monday, with tallies absent from numerous cities. In the state chief town Erfurt, for instance, the numbering of votes for the local authority selection commenced merely on Monday.
Over 1.7 million people were entreated to vote in the municipal election on Sunday. Roughly 7,500 slots in the Thuringian municipal parliaments were intended for allocation. Apart from district councils, city and municipal councils were elected. The municipal election was also seen as a litmus test for the Thuringian state election on September 1st.
Mostly, no candidate gained the necessary absolute majority in the elections for district chairpersons and mayors, hence there will be duels between the two strongest contenders two weeks later, concurrent with the European poll.
Just one of the 13 district president positions was confirmed on Sunday. Simply the incumbent SPD district president Peggy Greiser in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district managed to secure the absolute majority in the preliminary round.
In the district president election in the Altenburger Land district, the AfD candidate Heiko Philipp accrued the most votes with 33.0 percent, but failed to acquire the prerequisite majority. There will be a duel against the second-positioned CDU candidate Uwe Melzer, who obtained 32.2 percent. Previously, the AfD nabbed the initial and hitherto merely district president position in Germany.
In eight other districts, AfD applicants were in second place according to the preliminary provisional or intermediate outcomes, thus there will be duels there too. In the Hildburghausen district, the notorious right-wing extremist and former NPD functionary Tommy Frenck gained entrance into the duels with the candidate of the Free Voters, Sven Gregor. Frenck has been featured several times in the Constitutional Protection Report.
In the mayoral elections in Weimar and Suhl, the incumbents Peter Kleine (nonpartisan) and André Knapp (CDU) triumphed, according to the preliminary outcomes. There were no AfD applicants in either city. In the three other free cities of Erfurt, Gera, and Jena, the tallies will proceed to duels.
The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), which was taking part in an election for the first time, accomplished double-digit outcomes in numerous districts in the municipal council elections. The BSW contested its own lists in the Wartburgkreis and in the districts of Sonneberg, Greiz, and Gotha. Provisional results were initially accessible exclusively in the Greiz district, where the BSW secured 11.1 percent. The BSW has plans to enter the Thuringian parliament in September.

In the County council elections, the CDU and AfD often see close results. Despite the European elections approaching, counties in Thuringia, such as Erfurt, were still counting votes from the local elections held on Sunday. The CDU's André Knapp emerged victorious in a local mayoral election, while the AfD's Heiko Philipp fell short of a majority in the district president race, setting up a run-off election. Following these elections, numerous councillors will face duels in both district and city council positions, with some districts seeing participation of the far-right NPD affiliate, Tommy Frenck. In contrast, the incumbent mayors in Weimar and Suhl, Peter Kleine and André Knapp (CDU), respectively, secured their positions without a run-off. The new Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) managed decent results in various districts during the municipal council elections, aiming to enter the Thuringian parliament in September's state election.
