Process - In the way of the dream: Twelve years in prison for emigrants

An emigrant from Solingen has been sentenced to twelve years in prison for strangling his ex-girlfriend and throwing her body into a canal in the Netherlands. The Wuppertal district court found the 64-year-old guilty of manslaughter on Thursday.

The German is said to have killed the 57-year-old from Poland because she stood in the way of his dream of emigrating to Spain. In order to be able to finance a life in the sunny south, the man from Solingen had sold his house.

However, his ex-girlfriend did not want to emigrate or move out of the house. After the buyers threatened to withdraw from the purchase contract because of this, the Solingen man strangled the 57-year-old to death in September 2021, the court was convinced.

The case remained unsolved for a long time because the dead woman was found in the canal a few days later, but could not be identified for eight months. The investigation only got underway after her cousin was reported missing in April 2022, when it became clear who she was.

Her ex-boyfriend, who had since emigrated to Spain as planned, was arrested. He was even charged with murder for greed. According to the court, however, greed was not the determining motive, but rather anger and hatred over the deadlock over the house that had already been sold.

The sentence included an older penalty order with a one-year prison sentence from the Solingen district court. The verdict is not yet final.
