SC DhfK Leipzig athletes concluded their summer break with a victory during a home game. The team led by Runar Sigtryggsson triumphed over Rhein-Neckar Löwen, with a score of 29-24 (16:14), in the season finale on Sunday. Viggo Kristjansson - the top scorer for SC DhfK with 33:35 points for the final standings - secured the win, with seven goals on his own.
Close to 6,000 spectators attended this sold-out event and were treated to a fast-paced start. Within the first 5 minutes, 7 goals were scored. The hosts countered with a strong attack, using tempo changes and took control, leading 14:10 by the 24th minute. National players, such as Juri Knorr, helped the Löwen reduce the lead to 14:12 during halftime.
In the second half, the pace appeared slower with the Leipzigers acting too statically and displaying vulnerabilities against national goalkeeper David Späth. However, the tide turned in their favor after Tobias Reichmann equalized for the Löwen at 20:20 (43rd minute).
The game didn't entirely shift. Encouraged by the fan support, the Leipzigers increased their intensity and launched a strong attack. In a span of 5 minutes, they surged ahead to secure a decisive 28:23 lead between the 50th and 58th minutes. This exciting game was also marked by the emotional farewell of circle runner Maciej Gebala, who leaves to play for league rival HC Erlangen next season. Alongside Gebala, other players like Oskar Sunnefeldt, Tim Matthes, Moritz Strosack, Mika Sajenev, and Pascal Bochmann will also be departing the club.
