In the lead-up to Saxony's upcoming election, Kretschmer reiterates the necessity of dialogue with Russia.

Prior to the upcoming state election in Saxony, Minister-President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) once again advocated for diplomatic talks with Russia over the Ukraine conflict.Speaking on ZDF's 'Morning Magazine' on Tuesday, Kretschmer asserted,"I've been advocating for this for over two and a half...

In the lead-up to Saxony's upcoming election, Kretschmer reiterates the necessity of dialogue with Russia.

In the negotiation arena, Kretschmer pointed out the significance of buying time strategically. He opined, "At some stage, Putin and these belligerent forces will fade away." With a new generation coming up, there's potential for a "sincere, genuine peace." Kretschmer also voiced disapproval towards Germany's arms supply to Ukraine. He suggested that the funds presently spent on fueling conflict would be more beneficial for establishing a missile defense shield. He emphasized the need for "deterrence" with an "unstable neighbor" like Russia.

AFD's leading candidate, Jörg Urban, also spoke against the weapon delivery, stating, "The weapons we provision there won't end the conflict." Rather, Germany is inadvertently "stoking" the war with financial and weapon support to Ukraine. Despite the Russia sanctions, there's been no indication of backing down from Russia so far. Urban reiterated his call for a "diplomatic resolution." Pressure should be applied to both Russia and Ukraine, Urban emphasized.

Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) candidate, Sabine Zimmermann, urged for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. "This war must cease," Zimmermann asserted. Continuing to deliver more weapons and escalating the situation is not a solution, she said. The planned deployment of US missiles in Germany also exacerbates the situation. Zimmermann warned of an intensification of the war and stressed the importance of reviving diplomacy.

SPD top candidate, Petra Köpping, shared her concern that promises made regarding the Ukraine conflict might not be achievable in Saxony. "Who doesn't desire peace?" she asked. "We all yearn for peace, but the fact that peace is not materializing is not Saxony's fault, but Russia's," Köpping stated.

Franziska Schubert from the Green top trio discussed migration, advocating for a "structured process." Politics should ensure that migrant accommodation and integration are also "affordable." Each individual case needs to be considered while considering the deportation of people without residency permits. Opportunities for those who wish to work and build a life should also be found, Schubert emphasized.

According to a recent Forsa poll for "Stern" magazine and RTL TV station, the CDU could be the most influential party in Saxony with 33% support. The AfD stands second with 30%, while BSW could gain 13% immediately. The SPD and the Greens would both secure 6%, and the Left might lose its representation in the state parliament with 3%.

A new state parliament will be elected in Saxony coinciding with Thuringia on September 1. The continuation of the present government coalition of CDU, SPD, and Greens is uncertain. An alliance between CDU and BSW, with SPD as a potential additional partner, could secure a majority. Kretschmer firmly rejected cooperation with the AfD.

The European Union could play a crucial role in facilitating peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, as urged by Sabine Zimmermann of the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW). Despite Russia's current stance, continuing sanctions and pursuing a diplomatic resolution is crucial, as suggested by AFD's leading candidate, Jörg Urban.
