Second-tier champions crowned: - In the final, basketball players from Frankfurt suffer a defeat.
The Frankfurt basketball team, Fraport Skyliners, fell short in their quest for the championship at the second-tier Pro A league. In their last game, they lost to PS Karlsruhe Lions with a score of 79-93 in the first round, followed by a 80-92 defeat in the return game on Sunday (32-42). Since the Skyliners had already secured their spot back in the Bundesliga, these finals carried little significance.
In the lead-up to the season's final match, the club revealed that their captain and son of former national football player Rudi Völler, Marco Völler, was retiring. Having joined the team in 2017, Völler moved on to managing positions in the 2021/2022 season, simultaneously playing for the second team in the Pro B league. After the first team's fall from Bundesliga the previous summer, Völler rode again onto the scene as their captain, guiding them directly to promotion.
Skyliners managing director Yannick Binas praised Völler's efforts, commenting: "Marco has truly earned a positive conclusion. His dedication to the team and club has been unwavering, making him a recognizable face behind the success of this promotion."
