Severe weather conditions advance. - In the event of a flood, Bavaria aims to establish an emergency network to protect cultural assets.

In Bavaria, efforts are being made to better safeguard cultural assets against natural disasters, like floods and storms, in the future. A key aspect of this endeavor is the implementation of a statewide emergency system, which includes a portable container for storing valuable paintings. Scheduled for delivery in mid-2025, this mobile unit is part of a centralized network of emergency infrastructure designated to protect artworks throughout Germany. There will be a total of ten such "roll-off containers" intended for cultural asset preservation across the country.

The Bavarian Culture Minister, Markus Blume, informed the German Press Agency in Munich that the container will be stored at the State Archives' depot in the Freising district. During times of calamity, authorities in affected regions can request its deployment via the control center of the fire departments. "When emergencies strike, our cultural assets will be protected by experts from the network in close coordination with emergency services. This ensures timely, secure, and customized preservation of our treasured items," explained Blume.

Funds collected from the 2021 reconstruction aid, designated after the flood three years ago, will finance the acquisition of this container. On June 27, 2025, participating organizations will sign an agreement outlining the operation of the emergency network in Munich. In addition to large institutions like the State Picture Galleries, the State Archives, and the Bavarian National Museum, the State Office for Non-State Museums, the Archives of the Archbishoprics of Munich, Freising, and Bamberg, the Archaeological State Collection, and the Federal Archives Storage Center in Bayreuth will participate. Moreover, the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior, the Bavarian Fire Brigade Association, and the Bavarian Fire Brigades have endorsed the plan.

Blume mentioned that the network is to complement existing regional alliances, which he claims are present at all State Archives locations. The minister also plans to establish more local teams.
