In the coordinated speed checks conducted as part of the safety campaign "Drive.Arrive.Live", the authorities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern caught 2,854 speeding violations last week. This means that roughly one in five vehicles that passed the checkpoints was exceeding the speed limit.

"The goal of these checks is not to penalize as many violations as possible, but rather to raise awareness among all people about the issue of speed as a major cause of serious traffic accidents, which too often result in death and injury," explained Interior Minister Christian Pegel (SPD). In April, there was an action week in the northeast where even 54,500 vehicles were checked, with about one in ten exceeding the speed limit.

Excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of serious accidents. The previously declining trend in fatal traffic accidents in MV did not continue in the first half of 2024. According to the Ministry of the Interior, 48 people died on the state's roads in the first seven months of this year.

In 2023, there were 57 traffic fatalities in the northeast, the lowest number ever recorded in the state. Compared to the previous year, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern had the largest decrease in the number of traffic deaths, at 31 percent. Overall, the number of traffic fatalities in Germany in 2023 increased slightly.

Motorcycle riders should also be mindful of their speed, as they were among thevehicles checked during the action week in April. Despite the emphasis on awareness, motorcycle riders accounted for a significant number of speeding violations, illustrating the need for continued education and vigilance.
