In Solingen's attack context, Kühnert opposes Merz's suggestions regarding asylum politics

SPD's Secretary General Kevin Kühnert dismissed proposals by CDU leader Friedrich Merz to strengthen asylum policies following the knife attack in Solingen. Kühnert stated in ARD-Morgenmagazin on Monday that Merz proposed numerous ideas, but they are not legally viable. He emphasized the...

In Solingen's attack context, Kühnert opposes Merz's suggestions regarding asylum politics

"It's not right that we're essentially shoving the door in the faces of folks escaping from Islamists themselves," pointed out Kühnert. Instead, attention should be devoted to thwarting the radicalization of the youth. "We need to watch out for radical preachers, particularly online, and investigate how this radicalization process unfolds," said Kühnert.

Leader of the CDU, Merz, suggested halting the intake of refugees from Syria and Afghanistan, as well as deportations to these countries in response to the attack in Solingen's city center that left three dead and eight injured. He proposed discussions with Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) to collectively address the repercussions of this incident.

Kühnert confirmed that efforts are underway to send back hardened criminals, and in the suspect's case from Solingen, he could have been deported to Bulgaria. As sources report, the 26-year-old Syrian entered the EU in Bulgaria. The country, according to reports, was "prepared" to take back the man. The North Rhine-Westphalia state government must now explain why the return didn't succeed.

On Monday, Federal Chancellor Scholz will visit Solingen. He will speak to the press along with the North Rhine-Westphalian Minister President Wüst (CDU) in the morning.

Kühnert emphasized that instead of focusing on closing doors to refugees, we should direct our efforts towards preventing radicalization among the youth, as seen with the phrase, "We should not be essentially shoving the door in the faces of folks escaping from Islamists themselves, but rather focus on thwarting the radicalization of the youth." Furthermore, in light of the ongoing discussions about refugee policies, Kühnert also highlighted the importance of addressing and addressing the root causes of radicalization by monitoring radical preachers, both online and offline, stating, "We need to watch out for radical preachers, particularly online, and investigate how this radicalization process unfolds."
