In Rhineland-Palatinate, a man was fined for showing the letter Z in public.

In April 2022, there was a rally that took place not long after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February. The slogan for this event was "Opposing the discrimination of Russian-speaking citizens in Germany, against war, against fascism and Nazis."

A 54-year-old man from Mainz was present at the protest. He was spotted wearing a fur hat that had a Saint George's ribbon displayed on it above his forehead. The Saint George's ribbon is often seen as a symbol of Russian aggression by people from Ukraine. The letter Z, which is used by Russian forces in Ukraine, was also part of the design on his hat.

The court believes that the defendant's motivation was to show his support for Russia's attack on Ukraine through these symbols. The ex-convict appealed this ruling, but it has now been turned down by the regional court. The final verdict is not finalized yet.
