Severe heat wave expected. - In India, temperatures exceed 50 degrees Celsius.
India's capital city New Delhi is experiencing unprecedented heat with temperatures reaching 52.3 degrees. This blistering heat, documented at 14:30 local time on Wednesday in the Mungeshpur area, has never been witnessed in the city since records were first kept over a century ago, as stated by a representative of the Indian Meteorological Department to the German Press Agency.
The public has been warned about the potential risk of heatstroke. Most recently, even popular Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan fell victim to a heatstroke. Apart from New Delhi, a significant portion of the rest of northern India is currently battling a heat wave.
Alarmingly low water levels in India
Several regions of India, known as the most populous country in the world (1.4 billion inhabitants), are grappling with water scarcity issues. Numerous reservoirs have seen their water levels drop to a mere fraction of their storage capacity, as indicated by the local TV station NDTV, quoting the central water authority. This would also impact the country's hydropower generation.
As temperatures continue to soar, electricity demand has risen dramatically as people seek to escape the heat and, if they can afford it, operate their air conditioning units at maximum capacity.
The highest officially recorded air temperature on earth stands at 56.7 degrees, measured on July 10, 1913, at the Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley, United States, informed the German Weather Service.

India's meteorological department predicts that this heatwave could potentially surpass the 50-degree Celsius mark in several other cities, including Mumbai, known as the 'City of Dreams' in Bollywood.
