Parents of children over three years old in Brandenburg will no longer have to pay kindergarten fees as planned. From the completion of the third year of life until school entry, no fees will be charged from August 1st, as announced by the Ministry of Education in Potsdam on Wednesday.
In Brandenburg, more than 190,000 children are cared for in over 2,000 kindergartens. The fee exemption covers kindergartens under public sponsorship and those of free carriers. It also applies to children cared for by child daycare providers. Since 2018, no fees have been charged for the last kindergarten year before school entry.
Since August 1st, the first Children and Youth Act has been in effect in Brandenburg. It aims to strengthen children's and young people's rights in the state, expand their protection, and ensure clear participation and involvement of young people. Children and young people are to be protected from neglect, physical and psychological abuse, and sexualized violence. Families and other legal guardians are to be supported in fulfilling their protective duties. The law is reportedly unique in this form nationwide.
Regulation on distance learning comes into force
Distance learning - as practiced, for example, during the corona pandemic - can take place in schools from the next school year in an emergency situation and based on a concept approved by the school authority. However, the technical prerequisites must be in place, and all students must be able to participate equally. A new regulation has been introduced for this purpose, announced by the Ministry of Education. Brandenburg is the first federal state to introduce such a regulation. Distance learning during the corona pandemic was controversial.
subsequently, the Ministry of Education in Brandenburg has also proposed to incorporate 'education and training' into the first Children and Youth Act, ensuring free access for all children to additional educational programs outside of kindergarten and school. Furthermore, the state is planning to invest in teacher training programs to improve the quality of education and enhance the skills of educators.
