Upcoming European ballot - In a simulated election, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is leading among young voters.
In a mock European and local election targeted at youth in Saxony, the AfD received top votes from those under 18 years old, with a staggering 26% support. The Left came in second, accruing 14.8% of the votes cast. Following closely was the Greens with 11.6%, and the CDU and SPD fighting for the fourth and fifth spots with 11.2% and 9.8% each. The Party, Animal Welfare Party, and Pirates captured 6.2%, 4.3%, and 2.6% of the youth votes, respectively, while Party Animal Welfare Here! managed a meager 2.4%. The FDP lagged far behind with a mere 2.2% support.
Nationwide, the SPD emerged as the frontrunner with 19.7% of the votes. The CDU/CSU secured second place with a close 19.4% share. The Greens had 13.8%, the AfD garnered 13.6%, and the Left bagged 6.8% votes. The FDP, apart from being outperformed by the Animal Welfare Party, had only 4.1% of the electorate's support.
In this simulation of the Saxony municipal election, the AfD triumphed yet again, taking home 24.7% of the youth votes. The CDU (12.7%) and SPD (12.6%) lagged behind, with the Left (12.4%), the Greens (11.6%), and FDP (5.1%) trailing.
More than 3,900 votes were registered in the Under-18 European and Municipal Election. Conducive to political education, the event allowed voting from May 27th to May 31st. However, it is not deemed a representative survey.
The chairperson of the Saxon Youth Council expressed concern over the AfD's strong showing in youth-oriented polls, emphasizing that attributing these trends solely to the youth is inaccurate. Racism and extremism are deeply entrenched within society.
