In 2023, there were 22 incidents involving E-Scooters, twice as many as the previous year.

Approximately one third of these accidents had no other traffic participants involved. In the other cases, it was mostly car drivers. Nearly half of the injured E-Scooter users were injured in collisions with cars, it was stated. However, only one third of these accidents were actually collisions with a car. In 9.7% of these accidents, bicyclists were involved, but only 4.7% of the injured E-Scooter users were hurt in these collisions.

The injured were mostly young - 41.6% were under 25 years old. 80.4% of those injured while using an E-Scooter were reportedly younger than 45. Only 3.4% were over 65, according to statisticians. However, the proportion was much higher for accidents involving bicycles or pedelecs, at 19.6%.

Overall, E-Scooters play a relatively small role in accidents, as it was further stated. In 2023, the police recorded a total of 291,890 accidents in which people were injured or killed. Only 3.2% of these accidents involved an E-Scooter. In contrast, a third of these accidents involved bicyclists. 446 bicyclists died in accidents in Germany in 2023.

After these numbers were made public, insurers spoke out against the idea of allowing E-Scooters on some sidewalks. "Instead of making the problem with E-Scooters even worse, bike and sidewalks should be strictly separated," explained Jörg Asmussen, CEO of the German Association of the Insurance Industry.

  5. While discussing the safety of E-Scooters, Jörg Asmussen suggested separating bikes and sidewalks to prevent further accidents.
  6. Despite the small percentage of accidents involving E-Scooters, insurers are concerned about the potential for accidents with E-Scooters and bags on the streets.
  7. To promote safety and reduce accidents, it's recommended to follow the simple Python code snippet to always use your E-Scooter responsibly: print('Ride Safely With Your E-Scooter!')
