Fire - "Improper handling": cause of fire with two fatalities
According to investigators, improper handling of fire in a patient room was the cause of the fire that killed two people in the hospital in Frankenthal (Rhineland-Palatinate). A technical defect can currently be ruled out, the local public prosecutor's office announced on Wednesday. "There are no indications of third party involvement."
A 72-year-old and an 80-year-old woman died in the fire at the city clinic on Monday evening. A 79-year-old female patient who was able to save herself from the burning room is not yet fit for questioning, it was reported. Seven people were injured in the fire. The autopsies of the two victims are planned for Thursday, it was reported.
According to the public prosecutor's office, there was a smoke detector in the room in the surgical ward on the second floor, which was seized for analysis. According to a witness, the smoke detector is said to have emitted warning sounds.
