Important rail link in the Ruhr region is closed

For the third time, Deutsche Bahn is closing important routes around Duisburg. This will have a massive impact on the western Ruhr region for almost two weeks - for commuters and ICE passengers alike.

Due to construction work at Autobahn intersection Kaiserberg, the railway in the summer holidays will again block the important junction Duisburg for approximately two weeks. In local transport, many trains in the western Ruhr area will be canceled entirely from July 22 to August 2, and will be replaced by buses. In long-distance transport, ICE trains will be rerouted extensively. This affects many cities in the Ruhr area. This is the third time that the central railway line in the Ruhr area has been closed for several weeks due to construction work.

The cause of the closure was announced by the railway on a Wednesday. The Autobahn company plans to renew a bridge on the A3 towards the north at the intersection Kaiserberg. However, in the area of the motorways, eight railway tracks run, which trains from Duisburg use to travel on the two central east-west axes through the Ruhr area. While construction work is taking place above the Autobahn bridge, no trains may pass below for safety reasons, the railway emphasized. In addition, the railway intends to renew 6,000 meters of track between Mülheim and Essen and repair several bridges.

In Duisburg, Oberhausen, Mülheim and Düsseldorf-Airport, almost no long-distance train will stop during the closure. The construction work also has consequences for ICE connections in Düsseldorf, Essen and Dortmund. Since construction is also taking place simultaneously on the high-speed line between Cologne and Frankfurt, the train schedule for long-distance trains in the Ruhr area and beyond will be "partially significant" altered, the railway announced.

In local transport, most commuters between Essen, Oberhausen, Duisburg and partially up to Düsseldorf will have to switch to the shuttle bus service. The railway companies are deploying replacement buses on four lines between the major cities. Disruptions and reroutings exist in local transport on about a dozen lines. Affected lines are RE1, RE2, RE3, RE5, RE6, RE11, RE19, RE42, RE44, RB32, RB33, RB35 and the S1. In addition, commuters cannot switch to the S6 line between Essen and Düsseldorf this time - the track is closed due to a landslide.

  1. In the summer vacation, the central railway line in the Ruhr area, including stations in Duisburg, Oberhausen, Mülheim, and Düsseldorf-Airport, will be closed for approximately two weeks due to construction work.
  2. The construction work affecting the central railway line is taking place in the Ruhr area of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
  3. ICE trains, which typically travel through many cities in the Ruhr area, will be rerouted extensively during the closure.
  4. The cause of the closure is the renewal of a bridge on the A3 towards the north at the Kaiserberg freeway interchange, where eight railway tracks run, creating a critical junction for trains from Duisburg.
  5. While the bridge construction takes place, no trains will be able to pass below it for safety reasons, causing disruptions to local and long-distance traffic.
  6. In local transport, most commuters between Essen, Oberhausen, Duisburg, and partially up to Düsseldorf will have to switch to shuttle bus service during the closure.
  7. In addition to the railway disruptions, construction work is also taking place on the high-speed line between Cologne and Frankfurt, making traffic plans for long-distance trains "partially significant" altered.
