"I'm gutted": Hoeneß is upset after derby defeat

Sebastian Hoeneß was visibly annoyed. "I'm gutted," said the VfB Stuttgart coach after the Swabian duel in the Bundesliga. His team's 2-0 (0-0) defeat at 1. FC Heidenheim on Sunday was "unnecessary". They had "missed a huge opportunity" to move higher up the table and make the game against Borussia Dortmund next Saturday a kind of "bonus game", explained the 41-year-old. VfB are still third ahead of the clash with the runners-up, but have lost touch with the leaders for the time being.

Hoeneß said that he was particularly unhappy with the performance in the first half in Heidenheim. At times, his team was "not dynamic, not agile enough". Things improved somewhat after the break. However, Stuttgart missed another penalty through Silas (57th minute). Deniz Undav had missed from the spot in the 3:2 (0:2) defeat against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim a week earlier.

In the upcoming Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund, VfB Stuttgart missed an opportunity to elevate their position with a win against 1st FC Heidenheim, as Hoeneß acknowledged. Despite improving in the second half, 1st FC Heidenheim managed to keep VfB Stuttgart from scoring, even denying Silas a penalty goal, a repeat of Deniz Undav's missed penalty against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. This string of bad luck in penalties has further complicated Hoeneß's plans for the highly anticipated derby match against Borussia Dortmund's team in the Bundesliga.
