49 injured in playground brawl in Berlin hotspot - "I'm afraid to send my child to school"

A fight between young people (aged 14 to 15) escalated at the "Campus Efeuweg" community school in Berlin's hotspot district of Neukölln. A brawl broke out, pepper spray was also sprayed and in the end 49 people were injured! Two teachers (38, 30), the principal (52) and a police officer were also attacked. And all apparently just because of a soccer ...

What's going on at the school, which even needs its own security guards?

Pupil: Marcel B. (16): "Fights are normal here. But there was never actually any pepper spray. Security was there yesterday too, but didn't notice anything."

A pupil (Year 7) who wishes to remain anonymous: "That's what happens - it's a hotspot school. In the first lesson, we were told not to talk to anyone."

A pupil (15), who wishes to remain anonymous: "The boys have often caused stress, beating each other three times before. The teachers intervened at the time, but couldn't mediate. Nevertheless, I'm not afraid to go to school. I'm used to it."

Pupil Joel M. (16): "Two boys were fighting. My classmate tried to help, but then got hurt himself. After that, all the lessons were canceled."

What the parents say

A mother who picks up her son by car: "All the children were sent home early. It's terrifying. I'm afraid to send my child to school. I hope the incident has consequences."

A mother picking up her daughter from elementary school: "The primary school pupils have heard about the incident. I spoke to my daughter about it. It's normal now. I wish my daughter better things, that she didn't have to go to this secondary school."

This is what happened

Five pupils (aged 14 to 15) were fighting over a ball in the playground of the "Campus Efeuweg" community school. Suddenly, one of them pulled out a pepper spray and started spraying. He ran into the cloud of irritant gas himself and dropped the spray. One of those attacked picked it up and sprayed back. Another 15-year-old intervened - then fists flew!

Two teachers (38, 30) tried to mediate and were also attacked with pepper spray. The principal (52) also rushed over, was pushed by the teenagers and broke a finger. She was taken to hospital. The police arrived with several cars and initially calmed the situation.

Shortly afterwards, the older brother (21) of one of the participants stormed into the schoolyard and punched a police officer in the face! The officer brought the thug to the ground, but the 21-year-old continued to rant and threaten. He was arrested.

The bitter result: 49 pupils and teachers were injured by the pepper spray and had to be treated as outpatients. A security service has been guarding the school since December 4, but even the guards were unable to prevent the brawl.
