Trade union - IG Metall district manager Roman Zitzelsberger steps down

The head of IG Metall in Baden-Württemberg, Roman Zitzelsberger, is stepping down after a good ten years in office. He made the announcement on Thursday at the meeting of the Grand Collective Bargaining Commission in Pforzheim in front of around 250 trade unionists. After careful consideration, he had decided to open a new chapter, IG Metall also announced.

Zitzelsberger has been district manager in the south-west since 2013. At that time, he succeeded Jörg Hofmann, who had been elected to the IG Metall Executive Board. Since then, Zitzelsberger has negotiated the nationwide pilot agreement in the metal and electrical industry on several occasions. At the beginning of the year, he was also being discussed as the national head of the powerful industrial union. However, Hofmann's attempt to install the collective bargaining expert as co-chair alongside his then deputy Christiane Benner in a new type of dual leadership failed.

Zitzelsberger had announced in the spring that he did not want to move up to the IG Metall Executive Board, but instead wanted to remain district manager. He had cited health reasons for his decision. Benner was elected First Chairwoman in October.

"A lot has happened since the spring and I have become very aware of the great value of health," said the 57-year-old. Today, he has the strength back to weather even the toughest storms. But it had been a long road to get there, and he had gone through an intensive process of reflection and maturation. After taking some time out, he now wants to start something completely new.

Zitzelsberger intends to hand over the office by March 31. The search for a successor will therefore begin immediately. "I believe that it is a good time to hand over the baton and make room for new heads, just in time for the 2024 collective bargaining round to really heat up," he told the Stuttgarter Nachrichten and Stuttgarter Zeitung newspapers.

IG Metall boss Benner thanked Zitzelsberger for his many years of work. She said she very much regretted his decision. "Roman Zitzelsberger was an outstanding colleague at all levels in his long career at IG Metall, a heavyweight in collective bargaining policy, a person you could always rely on," she said. With his passing, IG Metall has lost an important strategist.
