Steel - IG Metall: 3000 steelworkers on warning strike in Salzgitter
IG Metall extended its warning strikes in the wage dispute in the north-west German steel industry on Thursday. According to the union, 3000 employees on the early shift at Salzgitter AG went on strike in the morning. The late and night shifts are also to go on strike. The employers' completely unacceptable pay offer had provoked the extension, said Knut Giesler, IG Metall's chief negotiator.
The union and employers will meet in Düsseldorf on Friday for their fifth round of negotiations. The employers would then have "the last chance to prevent a further escalation of the collective bargaining round in January", said Giesler.
The steel employers' association described IG Metall 's demands as "completely excessive". Among other things, the union is demanding a wage increase of 8.5 percent over a period of twelve months and a 32-hour week with full wage compensation. According to IG Metall, the employers have offered a one-off payment of 1,000 euros for January 2024 and a pay rise of 3.5 percent from July 2024 for a total term of 19 months.
