"Icon of hip-hop": 1Live special crown for Jan Delay
Musician Jan Delay will be honored with the special award for his services to German-language hip-hop and pop at the 1Live-Krone awards ceremony on November 30. He has decisively shaped the German music scene, the WDR radio station 1Live announced on Wednesday. The 2023 award recognizes the 47-year-old's outstanding work in a year in which music fans around the world are celebrating half a century of hip-hop.
As part of the combo "Absolute Beginner", Delay released the groundbreaking album "Bambule" in 1998. It marked the beginning of a remarkable career that has made him "an icon of German pop and hip-hop", the statement continued. 1Live music director Andreas Löffler emphasized his "unmistakable style" and his "unique personality".
In his 25-year music career, the rapper and singer with the distinctive nasal voice from Hamburg has also released several solo albums and experimented with soul, reggae and funk. The records "Mercedes-Dance", "Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Soul" and "Hammer und Sichel" all reached number 1 in the German album charts.
The award ceremony from the Lokschuppen in Bielefeld will be broadcast live on November 30 (8.15 pm) on WDR television, on 1Live radio and as a livestream in the ARD media library as well as on the 1Live app and YouTube channel. With the exception of the Corona years, the big music party was previously celebrated in Bochum.
In eight other categories, however, the audience will decide the winners themselves: Music fans can vote for their favorites from a total of 30 nominees until November 29. The nominees include rapper Cro, singer and songwriter Nico Santos, hip-hop artist Nina Chuba and the bands Kraftklub and AnnenMayKantereit.
The recognition of Jan Delay's impact on German-language music extends beyond awards, earning him the title of an "icon of pop and hip-hop" in the media. His groundbreaking album "Bambule," released with Absolute Beginner, paved the way for his successful career that spans multiple genres, including soul, reggae, and funk, frequently topping German album charts.
