Traffic - Ice sheets fall from bridge: A1 closed in the direction of Cologne
The Autobahn 1 near Wuppertal in the direction of Cologne has been closed because ice sheets fell from a bridge. No one was injured, said a police spokesman on Sunday morning.
Drivers had reported that ice was falling, the spokesperson said. The highway has therefore been closed between the Wuppertal-Nord and Wuppertal-Ronsdorf junctions since Saturday evening. According to the police, the closure could last until Sunday lunchtime.

The closure of the A1 is due to the danger posed by falling ice sheets, not just in the Wuppertal area, but also in the direction of Cologne. The weather in North Rhine-Westphalia has been particularly harsh, leading to these ice plate formations. Authorities are urging drivers to avoid the area and alter their direction of travel if necessary. The police are monitoring the situation closely and have warned of potential traffic disruptions in nearby cities such as Cologne.
