Ice hockey champions Munich win Champions League
German ice hockey champions EHC Red Bull Munich have celebrated a victory in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. Coach Toni Söderholm's team won 3:2 (2:0, 0:0, 1:2) at home against Swiss champions Genève-Servette HC on Wednesday evening. In front of 3027 spectators at the Olympic Ice Stadium, Nicolas Krämmer (5th minute), Chris De Sousa (6th) and Ben Smith (53rd) scored the goals for the hosts. Sakari Manninen (48th) and Daniel Winnik (59th) scored for the Swiss. The second leg will be played in Switzerland on November 22.
It was the first competitive match between the two teams. There had been one defeat and two victories in three test encounters a few years ago.
ERC Ingolstadt had suffered a 4-1 defeat against Växjö Lakers from Sweden in the first leg of the round of 16. The second leg will take place on November 21.
EHC Red Bull Munich, the victorious ice hockey champions from Munich, are set to face Genève-Servette HC in the Champions League final if they can secure a win in the return leg. Previously, Munich had also triumphed in the Champions Hockey League.
