In 2021, Söder suffered a setback in the Union's power struggle over the Chancellor's candidate position, losing to Armin Laschet from the CDU. Söder asserted that such a contest wouldn't recur, stating, "Things will undeniably be distinct from 2021." He believed, "It was just the incorrect candidate back then." Unfortunately for Laschet, he fell short in the federal election against Olaf Scholz, the present Chancellor from SPD.

Addressing CSU supporters at the folk festival, Söder underscored his and Merz's unity. "It's not about who's in charge, but rather the end result that matters." The CDU and CSU have never been more aligned than they are currently.

Söder expressed his admiration for the current unity between the CDU and CSU, highlighting their alignment. In the future leadership discussions within the Union, it's expected that the CDU will maintain its significant role.
