Hungary opposes a more interventionist stance for NATO in aiding Ukraine.
In a recent dialogue with Stoltenberg, Orban mentioned tough yet productive conversations. He revealed that Hungary wouldn't join military ventures outside its own borders pertaining to the Ukrainian conflict. Furthermore, Orban reassured that neither Hungary will provide financial support for the war nor would they deploy people on the war front. Nor would Hungarian soil be utilized for participation in the war.
Orban, who is considered Russia's strongest supporter among EU countries, has not backed away from Russia even when it launched an assault on Ukraine. Officials from various NATO nations have voiced reservations about an exclusion for Hungary during Stoltenberg's visit to Budapest, fearing it could serve as a template for other nations.
NATO's defense ministers are set to finalize a decision regarding NATO's future role in delivering weapons to Ukraine at their meeting on Thursday. The other 31 NATO members appear to endorse this plan, as per diplomatic sources, but the details still need clarification. To this point, NATO has not played a direct part in aiding Ukraine militarily, with most coordination occurring through the United States.
According to information from diplomatic circles, NATO seeks to take on a more significant part in ensuring ongoing weapon supplies to Kiev. This would become crucial if Republican nominee Donald Trump wins the US presidential election and stops all US support for Ukraine.
