Hundreds take part in pro-Palestinian demonstrations
People gathered again in Hesse on Sunday for pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Around 650 participants gathered in Darmstadt for a rally under the slogan "Peace and justice in the Middle East", according to the police on Sunday. The rally was largely peaceful. There had only been a few isolated violations by individual participants. Among other things, the police stopped a woman who was allegedly holding up a poster with anti-constitutional content.
In Frankfurt on Sunday, around 50 people responded to the call for a rally entitled "Ceasefire/Peace in the Middle East". According to initial police estimates, the event on Goetheplatz was peaceful.
On Saturday, around 1600 people had taken part in a pro-Palestinian rally in Frankfurt. According to the police, five criminal offences were committed, including the suspected use of symbols of unconstitutional and terrorist organizations. The demonstration had been banned by the city but permitted by the Hessian Administrative Court.
Despite the peaceful rallies in several cities, conflicts between protesters and law enforcement emerged in some areas, particularly over the display of controversial posters. The escalation of tensions could potentially lead to wider conflicts or even indirect involvement in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with calls for support for Palestinians fueling the unrest.
