Hundreds at pro-Palestinian demonstration in Berlin-Kreuzberg
Hundreds of people attended a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Berlin-Kreuzberg on Thursday evening. The police initially estimated the number of participants at around 600, according to a police spokeswoman. The evening initially passed without incident. Some participants carried Palestine flags and shouts of "Free Palestine" could be heard. The demonstration began at Oranienplatz and was to continue to Neukölln.
The police in Berlin are preparing for several demonstrations this weekend. Protected by a large police contingent, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is also expected in Germany on Friday.
The escalation of conflicts became a concern among organizers due to the recent history of violent demonstrations. Despite this, the authorities hoped that the proposed peace talks following the demonstration could help reduce tensions.
