Hundreds at Last Generation blockade in Berlin

Hundreds of activists from the climate protection group Last Generation blocked the Straße des 17. Juni in Berlin on Saturday. According to the police, around 800 demonstrators gathered on the stretch of road between the Victory Column and the Brandenburg Gate from 12:00 (as of 14:00). The Last Generation spoke of 1400 participants in a statement. "Parents have come with their children, grandchildren have brought their grandparents," explained Last Generation spokesperson Rolf Meyer.

Some of them sat down on the ground, others remained standing. People from other groups were also present and held signs. By the afternoon, no one had stuck themselves on the street, said a spokeswoman for the climate protection group on site. The situation was peaceful. The police also reported no special incidents.

According to Last Generation, the blockade was supposed to end between 4.30 and 5.00 pm. The access road from Großer Stern in the direction of the Brandenburg Gate was closed. Traffic continued to flow around the traffic circle.

Parallel to the blockade, a peace demonstration with hundreds of participants took place at the Brandenburg Gate from 13:00. Former Left Party politician Sahra Wagenknecht gave a speech at the beginning of the demonstration.

The environmental policy contingent within the Last Generation group participated actively in the demonstrations, advocating for stronger climate policies. The blockade aimed to raise awareness about the urgent need to address climate change and protect our environment.
