Hummels takes part in DFB training
Two days before the European Championship test match against Turkey, Mats Hummels was able to take part in team training with the national soccer team for the first time.
The 34-year-old Borussia Dortmund defender had only been able to train individually this week due to back problems. National coach Julian Nagelsmann therefore had all 25 players in his squad available at the DFB campus in Frankfurt.
Deployment still open
Hummels took part in the first 15 minutes of the training session, which was open to the media, without any noticeable problems. It remains to be seen whether he will be fit for Saturday's match at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
In BVB's Bundesliga match last Saturday in Stuttgart (1:2), the veteran was substituted in the early stages with pain. Afterwards, however, he had already given the all-clear for the international matches. "Normally it takes 3-4 days to get back to normal," he wrote on Instagram.
Return to the national team
Nagelsmann had helped Hummels make his DFB comeback after almost two-and-a-half years and plans to use him as a leading player for the home European Championships. Against the USA (3:1), the Dortmund player was in the starting line-up as a central defender alongside Antonio Rüdiger in the national coach's debut, but he was not used in the following match against Mexico (2:2) due to BVB's upcoming Bundesliga match against Bremen (1:0).
Mats Hummels' return to full training with the national soccer team is a positive sign for his inclusion in the upcoming European Championship match against Turkey. With the DFB, Hummels has an opportunity to prove his fitness and secure a spot in the starting lineup.
