Huawei sells more phones in China
Apple is losing ground in China. The sales of iPhone maker fell again in the second quarter. In contrast, Huawei was able to increase its sales. Therefore, the Chinese company is moving further up in the list of major providers.
On the important Chinese smartphone market, Apple is falling increasingly behind Huawei. According to a report published by industry service Canalys, the sales of the iPhone maker fell by nearly 7% in the second quarter to 9.7 million units.
With a market share of only 14%, the US company has fallen back from third to sixth place among the major providers. Huawei, on the other hand, increased its smartphone sales by 41% to 10.6 million units due to the success of its "P40" series, reaching a market share of 15%.
Analysts at securities firm TechInsights expect Huawei to sell more than 50 million mobile phones this year. Therefore, the company is expected to become the market leader in the industry.
So far, Vivo, Oppo, and Honor rank among the most successful smartphone brands ahead of Huawei. "Domestic manufacturers are proving their market leadership and for the first time occupy the top five places on the Chinese mainland market," summarized Canalys analyst Lucas Zhong. The Chinese mobile phone market as a whole grew by 10% in the previous quarter.
German government bans Huawei components
Huawei is under close scrutiny in many Western countries. The authorities are concerned about the proximity of the telecom equipment supplier to the Chinese government and the risk of espionage or manipulation of mobile phone networks. These allegations have always been denied by the company.
The German government announced a ban on Huawei components in 5G mobile phone networks in July. "The critical components must not be used in the core network latest by the end of 2026," explained Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser at the time. The critical management systems in the access and transport networks, on the other hand, must be replaced latest by the end of 2029.
In spite of the concerns and restrictions in western countries, Huawei continues to thrive in its home market. The Chinese tech giant saw a significant increase in smartphone sales during the second quarter, surpassing Apple with a market share of 15%.
Despite Apple's losing ground in China, quarterly figures show that Huawei's strong performance in the Chinese smartphone market has led to a shift in the list of major providers, pushing Apple to sixth place.
